Another area of potential for those interested in the concept of positive diagnosis, especially coaches, is motivation. Most coaches will be familiar with the concepts of intrinsic (the activity is inherently rewarding) and extrinsic (external rewards motivate you to engage in an unpleasant activity) motivation. Further, within this theory of motivation there are also finer shades of motivation including introjected motivation (when you, yourself, act as an external motivator, as in “I ought to do this” or “I should do this”) and identified motivation (when you have fully internalized the motivation and want to engage in an activity, even if it isn’t enjoyable).3 Together, these forms of motivation form a kind of continuum that ranges from the most externally to the most internally rewarding forms of motivation, as illustrated in Figure 5.1.
